I returned four days ago from a 10-day motorcycle ride up to Oregon for the 3-day BMW Motorcycle Owners Association rally in Salem.

“Awesome!” sums up the experience of being among 6,000 fellow motorcycle touring and adventure enthusiasts.

And the ride up through Owens Valley and Crater Lake, then back down the Oregon and California coasts was simply spectacular. In fact, you can read about these scenic routes described in my book, BACK ROADS CALIFORNIA: 24 LEISURELY DRIVES, co-authored with fellow travel writer Lee Foster and published last year by Dorling Kindersley.

While in Salem, I helped spread the word about the 9- and 15-day group motorcycle tours of Cuba for U.S. citizens that I lead on behalf of Texas-based MotoDiscovery. My two PowerPoint presentations on motorcycling in Cuba were well received and enthusiasm for sign-ups was astounding.

It was fantastic to see several clients from my two 15-day motorcycle tours in Cuba from winter 2013 at Salem, and to  be with Skip Mascorro et al of MotoDiscovery.

Here I am enjoying a quiet moment at Crater Lake, Oregon, on the way to the rally…
