Well, the big day has arrived. Today I fly to Cape Town to spend two weeks riding a 2015 Indian Roadmaster around South Africa. The gem of the African continent has been top of my must-visit list for years, so when Indian Motorcycles called me last year to invite me to fly to Cape Town to test-ride their deluxe top-of-the-line touring motorcycle, I jumped at the chance.
I’ve designed a sensational itinerary that will put the bike through its touring paces.
After two days in Cape Town, including Cape of Good Hope, I’ll make my way east along the famous Garden Route and along the coast to Port Elizabeth. Then inland to Addo Elephant National Park–with the largest concentration of elephants on the continent–and two nights at the deluxe Gorah Elephant Camp. Let’s see if the Roadmaster can outrun the lions! Actually, the bike will have to be parked at the entrance station, but no matter.
I’ll then see how the bike handles dirt roads as I explore Kwande and Bucklands Private Game Reserves, with two nights at equally upscale safari lodge and tented camp.
Then it’s westward, returning via Outdshoorn and Paarl for a night reveling in South Africa’s stunning wine-country. I’m especially looking forward to a sublime night at Grand Roche, where I plan a photo shoot with professional model Kim Robinson.
Stay tuned for updates from the field, and for my feature articles to appear in Robb Report (August 2015 edition), plus Rider, Bike (UK), the inflight of Qatar Airlines, and other upscale lifestyle magazines.
